The joke isn’t about not being able to manage your money? It’s about the silly justifications we use for buying ourselves the occasional treat? I mean maybe some people have ruined the joke but all the times I’ve seen it used it’s been about saying silly things like “it doesn’t count because I’m paying cash” which obviously nobody actually believes?

we are in a media literacy crisis
friendly reminder that characters don’t need to be saints to be entertaining. and telling a story does not mean endorsement. art does not need to be all about morally good people.
IDK if this was meant as hyperbole but it’s literally true:
We are genuinely in a crisis of media literacy, with ever fewer genuinely factual resources available in the style and language used by contemporary audiences.
It may sound condescending, but we genuinely need to remind people, or worse, explain to them for the first time that art is not evidence of real world behaviour.

if i made tv shows i would insist on having those “previously on…” recaps at the start of each episode because they’re fun and also so i could use one of them to show a series of events that definitely never happened in the story before being like “oops! wrong timeline lol” and cutting to the actual opening and never acknowledging what the fuck just happened again

i will never forget in an s2 episode of Castle, one of the characters lawyers up before speaking to the police, and then it turns out she has an alibi. and Castle’s like why the whole show with the lawyer and Beckett was like “she’s just wanted to gum up the works”
and even in 2010 at the tender dumbass age of 25 i was like???? NO??? you have a right to a lawyer. in fact it would absolutely be in YOUR BEST INTEREST irl to lawyer up! police are bastards who will do whatever it takes to close the case– lie, fabricate evidence, steal DNA samples, force confessions, whatever. they aren’t your friend and they aren’t there to protect you, theyre there to CLOSE. THE CASE. whether they get the right guy or not.
think about the amount of people who are in jail for crimes they didn’t commit. its a bigger number than you’d expect and absolutely more than an acceptable margin of error.
fuck the cops. know your rights. if you ever get arrested you ask for your lawyer (EXPLICITLY. “I WANT A LAWYER”) and then invoke your right to silence (”I AM INVOKING MY RIGHT TO SILENCE.”)
AND THEN YOU SHUT THE FUCK UP. you dont say ANYTHING. not about the weather, not about im thirsty, not about your kids or your job or your dog. NOTHING. you go to a zen happy place, or you recite fanfic in your head, but whatever you do, you shut. the fuck. up. until your lawyer gets there.

Big fan of characters realizing they don’t get to die. They have to live. And grow. And be a person. And deal with shit they thought they’d never have to. And be fucked up about it. I would like more of this. Enough dying for honor or as redemption. It ain’t. You’re just a corpse. There is no moral value in dirt time.
